ENFIELD – As this year’s production for their Summer Theater for Young Performers series, the Opera House Players proudly presents School of Rock weekends from Aug. 11 to 20 at the Enfield Annex at 124 North Maple St., featuring the talents of actors aged 10 to 22. This production is directed by OHP’s Tim Reilly, with assistant director Nate Ferreira, musical director Graham Christian, and choreographer Courtney Normand.

Tickets are available for $25 for adults and $21 for seniors, students, and children under 12. To purchase, visit the OHP website at operahouseplayers.org/tickets or tickets will be available at the door. This show does contain mild adult themes and language. Additional information is also provided on the Opera House Players’ Facebook and Instagram pages.

School of Rock sunglasses will be on sale for $10 each during performances. All proceeds will go to support United Sound, a new, inclusive, peer-mentoring program at Enfield High School that provides access to ensemble music education to students with learning and developmental disabilities. This course bridges the gap between students with disabilities and their peers by developing an inclusive positive community and bringing all students into the traditional ensemble.

Paint Outside the Lines will take place Monday, Aug. 14 & 21, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The art studio will be set outdoors. When done, enjoy a story and snack. No registration is needed. In the event of rain, this program is canceled.

Book Babies is Monday, Aug. 14, from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m.; and Thursday, Aug. 17, from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Join Kidspace for a program for babies 16 months and under and their caregivers. Enjoy developmentally appropriate stories, songs, and rhymes. Registration is needed.

Beyond the Breed is Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. The Connecticut Humane Society will be presenting Beyond the Breed in Kidspace. This program offers participants an opportunity to test their knowledge of different dog breeds while learning about how they came to be. Ages 7 to 17 will learn why knowing the lineage of a dog can be important and how genetics contribute to pet health. Please register.

Paws & Pages will take place Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. The Connecticut Humane Society will be joining Kidspace for Paws & Pages Storytime. They’ll be reading some pet friendly books and talking to us about caring for our animal friends. Ages 4 to 8 is recommended for this program, but any aged kiddo is welcome to join. Please register.

The talent show is Wednesday, Aug. 16, 6 to 7:30 p.m., and is for ages 4-14 years old. Sing a song, dance, tell jokes, show us your hobbies, talk about your special interest, or use a hula hoop. Bring a friend as your partner. Please register.

The Super Smash Bros Ultimate game tournament, hosted by local Massachusetts eSport and gaming venue, One Up Games, will take place Saturday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Controllers will be available. Players are also welcome to bring their own controller if they prefer. For ages 6 to 17.

WINDSOR – Concertgoers at the Thursday, Aug. 10, Windsor Concert on the Green are encouraged to bring nonperishable food that will be collected by the Windsor Food & Fuel Bank. On that day, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Connecticut’s dynamic Nekita Waller will perform on the Windsor Town Hall lawn on Broad Street as part of a weekly free concert series presented by First Town Downtown. Rain date is the Tuesday after.

The community food drive for people and pets is coordinated by Joyce and Dick Armstrong of Windsor, who also are one of the concert’s sponsors. The Windsor Food & Fuel Bank’s most needed items include peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti sauce & pasta, macaroni and cheese, canned meats, crackers, cereal, baked beans, canned vegetables, canned fruit, fruit juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate, and condiments such as ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. The nonprofit organization also seeks personal care items such as paper towels, facial tissues, toilet paper, diapers, and baby wipes. Dry and wet cat/dog food, and cat/dog treats are also welcome.

SOMERS – The Somers Cultural Commission is looking for professional and amateur artists to enter their art work in the upcoming annual Regional Juried Piedmont Art Show 2023. Entries will be accepted on Friday, Aug. 25, and Saturday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon at Piedmont Hall, 604 Main St.

Cost per entry is $25 for the first piece and $15 for each additional piece. For additional information and/or requesting an entry form (also available on entry days), contact Neil at 860-749-4924.

A Teen Ice Cream Party will take place on Friday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. Teens ages 12-18 are invited to enjoy ice cream with all the fixings and music from the current Billboard Top 100.

Set sail with Moana and her crew on Friday, Aug. 11, at 9 p.m., at a free ‘drive-in’ movie on the lawn. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy Moana (rated PG) on the big screen. The movie will move inside at 6:30 p.m. if it rains. Free popcorn is provided.

Pearls from Carol will take place Monday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m. When Carol Ann Ruggiero passed away, her devoted husband Albert gathered her writings into a published collection. It’s a book that was never meant to be – a compilation of 20 years’ devoted effort for a local writer’s group.

“Discover Your Roots” Summer Finale will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 16, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Bring a blanket, a picnic lunch and take part in old-fashioned picnic games like sack race and sponge toss. You may get wet so bring a towel and a bathing suit. This drop-in program is for all ages.

How to Be Italian (as if you didn’t know) with Enzo Boscarino will take place Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 6:30 p.m. This program illustrates Italy’s culture, rich history, art, popular traditions, music, customs, language, family ties and how this impacts their life and how they express themselves. The audience is invited to participate in singing and in all of the activities presented.

A native of Italy until the age of 21, Boscarino taught Spanish in West Hartford for 34 years. He is presently employed by Central Connecticut State University and Saint Joseph College as a professor of Spanish.

ENFIELD – Enfield Adult and Continuing Education’s fall 2023 registration began on Aug. 1. Area residents can register for courses two ways, enroll online on the Enfield Adult Education registration site at enfield.revtrak.net or by mail-in registration. Brochures are being mailed out to area residents, the brochures are also available online at adulted.enfieldschools.org and at the town halls and libraries in East Granby, Enfield, Granby, Somers, Suffield and Windsor Locks. ENFIELD – The topic for the August 2023 edition of Senior Living TV program is about senior mental health, substance abuse, problem gambling and addiction. Michael Helechu will interview Geralyn Laut, a board member of Amplify, that deals with those issues in the senior population.

Senior Living TV is a program of interest for older adults. The show is produced by the Enfield Commission on Aging with the help of Cox Public Access TV.

Senior Living airs on Cox cable channel 15 on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at 9:30 a.m. To watch Senior Living, go to Cox PATV channel 15 and search under the program schedule for Senior Living.
